It’s an exciting time to join Origin. Creating a great place to work means together we’re progressing our ambition to lead the energy transition through cleaner energy and customer solutions. We’re always looking for better ways to deliver for our customers – and for our people.
About the role
As the Principal Advisor / Lead – Occupational Safety at Origin, you are responsible for designing and setting the frameworks and standards for the company in the areas of workplace occupational personal safety. You’ll provide high-level, expert insights on strategic issues, guiding senior leadership or internal customers on critical decisions and manage the most complex, high-impact issues that require top-level expertise, often influencing major business or policy decisions.
The role is required you to set and drive consistency in HSE policies, procedures, and processes while allowing for necessary customisation based on each business unit's unique operational requirements.
Key responsibilities
- Strategic Safety Leadership: Develop, implement, and refine the organisation's occupational safety strategy to align with corporate goals and regulatory requirements, ensuring continuous improvement across all safety programs. This includes setting company frameworks and standards for common risks and critical controls, ensuring they align with regulatory requirements while support business unit needs.
- Governance of Critical Controls and Risk Management: Define, maintain, own, and govern discipline-specific critical controls as part of the Origin Risk Framework. Oversee risk management processes to ensure alignment and consistency across the company, strengthening controls to reduce risk and improve safety performance.
- Continuous Improvement: Identify emerging safety risks and trends, use data to identify insights to drive data-based decisions, and champion initiatives that mitigate risks, enhance safety performance, and promote innovation in safety practices.
- Mentorship and Guidance: Provide expert guidance and mentorship to Health and Safety Advisors across the organisation, fostering a culture of professional growth, collaboration, and high performance to enhance team capabilities and ensure safety knowledge and best practices are embedded across the organisation.
- Stakeholder Collaboration and Influence: Act as a key advisor to senior leadership and business units, influencing decision-making, policy development and advocating for safety priorities through expert recommendations.
- Contract and Service Provider Management: Establish, oversee and manage a panel of service providers to deliver against business requirements in the discipline of Occupational Safety. Ensure service providers are aligned with Origin’s safety objectives and risk management frameworks.
What will you bring?
- Extensive experience (10-15+ years) in occupational health and safety management within the energy industry or a similar high-risk sector (e.g., utilities, oil and gas, chemical manufacturing) is highly preferred.
- Tertiary qualifications in the field of Occupational Health and Safety, or appropriate tertiary level qualifications in a relevant HSE or engineering discipline.
- Expertise in conducting complex risk assessments and implementing advanced controls for diverse or high-risk environments.
- High-level leadership skills with the ability to drive HSE culture, mentor teams and influence senior management on safety strategies.
